Cemetery of Rocafort's Extension

The municipal cemetery of Rocafort had reached the point where 98% of the existing niches were full and needed an extension space. The only free area was a vacant lot next to the adjoining park. Starting from the historical structure of totally unconnected extensions that the site had undergone, the project concentrated on creating a connecting piece between all of them and the adjoining green environment.

The solution seeks both the idea of connection and intersection. On the one hand, it proposes openings for the union between the existing parts of the cemetery, accentuated by the organic organisation of the niches around two meeting places with trees. On the other hand, the proposal generates a landscaped environment with vegetation, gabion walls with exposed stone and green roofs, creating an intersection with the neighbouring park.

Thus, the proposed extension, in addition to becoming an essential unifying fragment of the entire site, proposes the transformation of the idea of the traditional cemetery. The project aims to turn the funerary space into a public urban square that welcomes visitors every day. Thus, the combination of stone walls, the organic movements of the niche structures and the gardens offers different nooks and crannies for visitors to rest in. In addition, the project enhances the biodiversity of the environment, thanks to the green roofs of the niche structures, the landscaped areas, and the placement of bird nesting boxes and bat shelters at key points in the proposal. The project has also been designed so that all the plant and tree spaces are infiltration points for rainwater, thus encouraging its absorption within the area itself.

In short, the spatial structure proposed for the new funerary enclosure aims to generate a serene meeting place for visitors and their deceased, based on the formal and environmental qualities of the proposal.
